Diabetes and Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine treats diabetes according to the individual’s unique pattern of symptoms.  No two people with diabetes have identical symptoms whether it is Type I or Type II.  In Chinese medicine diabetes is described as “Wasting & Thirsting Syndrome” as often the main symptoms of Type 1 diabetes are excessive thirst and hunger with weight loss.

In either Type 1 or Type 2 the main organs to stimulate would be the pancreas, and the kidneys.  We can stimulate the body with acupuncture or herbal therapy.  Acupuncture can help regulate the endocrine system by helping to regulate blood sugar metabolism.Continue reading

Breast Cancer and Traditional Chinese Medicine

There are two approaches that may be taken with breast cancer according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  The first approach would be to practice prevention by observing symptoms of imbalance within the body.  For example, breast tenderness and fibrocystic breast disease along with moodiness, feelings of frustration and chronic tension headaches are indications that the body is stagnant. Cancer cells proliferate within an environment of stagnation as the healthy cells lack oxygen.  Using acupuncture and herbs, we can stimulate blood flow, oxygenate the cells and re-establish the function of the organs in order to remove stagnation.Continue reading

Acupuncture for Pregnancy & Post-Partum Support

At our clinic we offer support during pregnancy by stimulating the body to prepare itself for delivery. This procedure is called, Cervical Ripening.  It has been noted that the Cervical Ripening protocol helps labour to progress at a normal rate and can help shorten the average time spent in labour.  This procedure and post partum care can also enable the woman to recover more effectively after the baby is born.  Chinese medicine teaches us that vital energy or “qi” is depleted by labour and also by the energy necessary to care and feed the baby.

Acupuncture can also be helpful for the following conditions experienced both during and after pregnancy:

  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle aches & pains
  • Breech presentation
  • Induction
  • Post-partum depression
  • Mastitis

Our therapies can include acupuncture, herbs, laser acupuncture and massage.
