Post-Partum Diet Advice

Rebuild qi (energy): oats, mulitgrains (7-grain, kamut, barley etc) brown rice, wild rice, potato, sweet potato, mushroom (shitake etc), yam, basil, cinnamon, clove, dill, fennel, fenugreek(good for breast milk production), ginger, nutmeg, rosemary, thyme, jasmine tea

Rebuild Blood: sweet rice, beetroot, dark leafy greens, apricot, avocado, date, kidney bean, black sesame seeds, egg, soya milk, red meat, spinach, corn.

Other: fish, oysters, mussels. No bottom feeding shell fish. Foods should be roasted, steamed or baked.  Lots of soups and stews.  No raw food.

Body temperature is also a good indication of appropriate foods:

Warm or Sweating?

  • Avoid: coffee, alcohol, sugar, strong pungent spices.
  • Use: aduki, black and kidney beans, tofu, coconut milk, fish, beef, pork, egg, apple, pears, apricot, avocado, watermelon, celery, cucumber, oysters, mussels


  • Avoid: cold drinks (ice cubes), ice cream, raw foods and salads (warm dressing if necessary)
  • Use: radish, leek, squash, chestnut, sweet rice, fennel seed, basil, bay leaf, black pepper, cayenne, coriander, garlic (watch for indigestion in baby if breastfeeding), anchovy, mussel, trout, mutton/lamb, peach, vinegar
